Reading Wins Seven Events to Secure Massachusetts DII State Title

The 2018 Massachusetts DII Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Nov. 18 at Harvard University in Boston, Mass.

The girls of Reading Memorial High School won seven events to clinch the state title with a final score of 402.5 ahead of Wellesley (307.5) and Ursuline Academy (235). Walpole swam away with the title on the boys’ side with 100 points.

Girls Meet

The meet began as Reading’s Molly HamlinAnna RobertsSamantha Brabeck and Alana Loughman won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:47.88, about four seconds faster than runner-up Wellesley (1:51.91).

Shortly after leading off Reading’s winning relay, Hamlin was back at it to claim the 200 free title as her own in 1:52.36 – six seconds faster than the rest of the field. She was also victorious in the 100 free with a final time of 52.35.

Two seniors found themselves on the top of the podium in the 200 IM: Roberts and Marshfield Olivia Mozoki both stopped the clock in 2:09.15 to share the title. Mozoki got the 100 fly gold all to herself after getting her hands to the wall first in 58.29.

Belmont’s Sophie Butte sprinted to first in the 50 free in a time of 24.89, less than a tenth ahead of runner-up Nellie Thompson (24.68) of Wellesley. The 100 breast title went to Roberts, who bested the field by two seconds in 1:05.31.

Central Catholic’s Kerrigan Hemp dropped over 16 seconds from her entry time to dominate the 500 free, winning by six seconds in 5:07.52. She also grabbed the gold in the 100 back after powering home in 57.03.

Reading got another victory in the 4×50 free relay as Kayla Loughman, Roberts, Maura Letendre and Alana Loughman combined to win in 1:38.09. Barbecue, Letendre, K. Loughman and Hamlin concluded the meet as 4×100 free champions in 3:38.16.

Walpole’s Casey LaliberteMatthew FerraroMichael Rose and Matthew Samargedlis won the 4×50 medley relay in 1:56.56 ahead of Billerica’s 2:01.78. Ferraro, Laliberte and Rose teamed up with Andrew Hendricks to win the 4×100 free relay in 3:47.77. Rose then went on to win the 50 free in 23.80.

Milton’s Joe Pezzini was named 200 IM champion after leading the charge in 2:05.02 and his teammate Andrew Tran took first in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.48. Pezzini (1:01.86) and Tran (1:09.37) took gold and silver, respectively, in the 100 breast.
