SANTA CLARA, California, June 21. THE men’s 100-meter freestyle finale proved to be stacked at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara, but that didn’t matter to California sprint star Nathan Adrian as he smoked the field.
Adrian raced his way to a sizzling time of 48.17, just off his third-ranked season best of 48.08 from the Mare Nostrum in Barcelona. He won the sprint by more than half-a-second as Michael Phelps showed that he’s rounding into world-class form in all of his potential events pretty quickly. Phelps clocked a 48.80 for silver tonight, almost cracking the top 20 in the process.
NBAC’s Conor Dwyer held off NYAC’s Adam Brown, 49.76 to 49.92, for third-place honors, while NBAC’s Yannick Agnel wound up fifth in 49.94. Califronia’s Anthony Ervin (50.03), Santo Condorelli (50.35), Auburn’s James Disney-May (50.44) and Auburn’s Marcelo Chierighini (50.94) also competed in the A final.
