Queens Freshman Alex Kunert Shatters NCAA Division II Record in 200 Fly

Another Queens swimmer surged to a national title in an NCAA Division II record on Friday night in Indianapolis at the NCAA Division II Championships.

Freshman Alex Kunert won the 200 fly in 1:41.19, crushing the previous mark of 1:42.04 set by his teammate Marius Kusch in 2017.

Kusch set the Division II record in the 100 back earlier on Friday.

Kunert won the event by more than three seconds.

Colorado Mesa junior Pedro Terres Illescas finished second in 1:44.28, followed by Delta State freshman Federico Bracco (1:44.83).

Bellarmine freshman Matthew Sims finished fourth in 1:46.33, followed by Southern Connecticut’s Leo Laporte (1:46.72), Nova Southeastern’s Magnus Poulsen (1:46.91), Tampa junior Brian Valedon (1:48.55) and Missouri S&T junior Aaron Taske (1:48.80).
