NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Luke Fortner of Apex, N.C. has pledged his verbal commitment to Purdue University beginning in the fall of 2021.

He will join Idris Muhammad, Brady Samuels and Lance Lesage as a member of the Boilermakers’ class of 2025.

I’m proud to announce my verbal commitment to Purdue University! Thank you to my coaches, teammates, and family for all their support throughout this process. I can’t wait to continue my academic and athletic careers as a Boilermaker. Boiler Up!”

A talented breaststroker and IMer, Fortner does his club swimming with New Wave Swim Team and most recently finished 11th in the 200m breast at Cary Sectionals. He placed 22nd in the 200 breast at Juniors East in December and had a strong showing at NCSAs in 2019. Last summer, he won the 200m breast at TYR Summer Seniors where he also earned bronze in the 50m breast and 100m breast.

His best times include:

  • 200 IM – 1:54.67
  • 400 IM – 4:04.35
  • 100 breast – 56.48
  • 200 breast – 2:02.50

Also competing for Enloe High School, Fortner placed fifth in the 100 breast and 13th in the 200 IM as a junior at the North Carolina 4A State Championships. He finished second and third, respectively, in those events at the 4A Eastern Regional meet in 2020.

Fortner has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors twice in his career thus far.

Under head coach Dan Ross, Purdue finished seventh in the team standings at the 2020 Big Ten Championships and have a young but talented team in place for next season.
