Olivia Smoliga just missed qualifying for a trip to London four years ago with a fourth-place finish at Trials in the women’s 100 back. Now 21, the Chicago native who will be a senior this fall at the University of Georgia, emerged from the shadows of American backstroke legends Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin to win the event and qualify for her first U.S. Olympic team.

After being a runner-up last year, Rancho Margarita (Calif.) High School’s Grant Shoults was named Swimming World’s Male High School Swimmer of the Year for the 2015-16 season. He set two national high school records, competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials and will be swimming for Stanford next fall.

Beata Nelson, Swimming World’s Female High School Swimmer of the Year, finished her storied high school career at Verona Area/Mount Hebron High School in Wisconsin with a public high school record in the 100 yard fly (51.62) as well as 12 state titles. This fall, she’ll be swimming for the University of Wisconsin.
