Shaving down for the big meet is a practice that goes way back. For years it was always an uncertainty as to exactly why the practice seemed to work. Coaches didn’t know whether it created a physiological advantage, or simply a psychological edge, or a combination of the two. All they knew was that it helped swimmers go faster. Recent studies by David Cost_ill, et. al., have shown that indeed there is a distinct physiological benefit to a shave. In this most recent study, researchers determined that shaving decreases active drag for swimmers. See story on page 10.
