“Yeah, all this lactate research isgreat, I suppose, but how can you apply it?” That question seems to be heard over and over when coaches talk about the testing the sports medicine crew is doing for United States Swimming. This month John Troup, USS Director of Sports medicine, has outlined a hypo-thetical training season for a hypothetical swimmer, based on VO 2 and lactate readings. Troup’s article gives a clear view, in layman’s terms, of just how practical this testing can be in establishing a training regimen.
