Princeton Reclaims Ivy League Men’s Title
PRINCETON – The Princeton Tigers reclaimed the Ivy League men’s title from Harvard, which ended a five-year Princeton run last year with an 82-point victory.
Princeton has won the last six Ivy League Championship meets held at their home pool (2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015).
Penn’s Chris Swanson cleared the NCAA A cut in the men’s 1650-yard free to start the final night of the meet. Swanson, who beat the oldest record in the Ivy League books last night, won tonight in a pool and meet record 14:45.12.
Swanson’s swim eclipsed the pool record of 15:00.16 set by Princeton’s Paul Noelle back in 2012, and downed Swanson’s own meet record of 14:53.75 from last year. Harvard’s John Cole’s 2002 conference mark of 14:39.71 still stands.
That gave Swanson a distance sweep here at the Ivy League Championships.
Yale’s Kei Hyogo (14:50.88) and Brian Hogan (14:53.54) also cleared the former meet record by also beating 15:00.
Yale’s Rob Harder just missed the new Ivy League record in the 200-yard back with a 1:41.69 for the victory. Harvard’s Jack Manchester, who set the record with a 1:41.44 in prelims, wound up second in 1:42.05. Cornell’s Dylan Sali snatched third overall in 1:43.40.
Columbia’s David Jakl followed his double victory last night with a victory in the 100-yard free. Jakl clocked a 42.75 for the win, while Penn’s Eric Schultz took second in 43.09. Princeton’s Harrison Wagner wound up third in 43.56.
Cornell’s Alex Evdokimov followed his 100 breast win with a touchout triumph in the 200-yard breast against Harvard’s Eric Ronda, 1:56.13 to 1:56.19. Princeton’s Jack Pohlmann was also in the mix with a third-place 1:56.21.
Penn’s Wes Thomas (1:56.37), Penn’s Cole Hurwitz (1:56.45) and Yale’s Jonathan Rutter (1:56.82) were also in the 1:56 range.
Columbia’s Kevin Quinn picked up the 200-yard fly title in 1:43.10 with Princeton’s Corey Okubo taking second in 1:44.52. Princeton also finished 3-4 with Zach Buerger (1:44.95) and Marco Bove (1:45.54) taking third and fourth.
Harvard’s Michael Mosca claimed the three-meter diving title for the third time with 457.35 points. Columbia’s Jayden Pantel took second with 368.55 points, while Princeton’s Michael Manhard placed third with 347.80 points.
Princeton closed out a dominate team victory with a win in the 400-yard free relay.
Sandy Bole (43.38), Harrison Wagner (43.11), Julian Mackrel (43.12) and Connor Maher (43.43) won in 2:53.04. Columbia joined them under the NCAA A cut as David Jakl (42.98), Alex Ngan (43.05), Terry Li (44.16) and Joe Shepley (43.53) took second in 2:53.72. Yale picked up third in 2:56.19.
