Editorial Coverage provided by
Josh Prenot punched his ticket to Rio by winning the men’s 200 breast, stopping the clock in 2:07.17.
His time ranks him first in the world this year and is the second fastest of all time behind world record holder Akihiro Yamaguchi’s 2:07.01.
His time clipped Eric Shanteau’s American record of 2:07.42 set back in 2009. He also broke Kevin Cordes’ U.S. Open record of 2:07.81 set yesterday during semifinals. Cordes, who will also represent Team USA in the 100 breast, finished second in 2:08.00.
This win marks Prenot’s first Olympic berth. He also finished third in the 100 breast this week in Omaha.
The first-time Olympian talked to the media about staying relaxed during his race, picking up his pace, and the future of breaststroke for American men.
