In the first night in the aquatic center in Rio, gold medals were awarded in four events.
Kosuke Hagino ended the Americans’ five Olympic winning streak in the 400 IM, and was joined on the podium by his Japanese teammate Daiya Seto. Michael Phelps‘ protege Chase Kalisz brought home silver in his Olympic debut.
In a wide open men’s 400 freestyle field, defending gold medalist Sun Yang and Mack Horton powered away from the field in the final 50 meters and Horton got his hand to the wall first to take gold for Australia.
Katinka Hosszu demolished the world record in the women’s 400 IM. The Australian quartet of Bronte and Cate Campbell, along with Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie clocked a new world mark of their own in the women’s 400 freestyle relay.
While Adam Peaty did not challenge the world record he set in prelims of the 100 breaststroke, the swimmer for Great Britain still swam well ahead of the field in the semifinals.
