Phoebe Bacon Wins Three as Wisconsin Records Wins Against UC-San Diego, UCLA

The Wisconsin Badgers were on the West Coast Saturday for a meet at UC-San Diego, with the women of UCLA, Wisconsin’s future Big Ten rival, also joining. The Badgers were the dominant team, recording three total wins on the day, with 2021 Olympian Phoebe Bacon as the standout individual performer and four of her male teammates winning two individual events each.

For Wisconsin’s women, Bacon earned three individual victories, in the 100 backstroke (53.36), 100 IM (55.97) and 200 IM (2:00.44). Teammate Abby Carlson posted wins in the 500 freestyle (4:46.24) and 100 freestyle (50.43) while Mack McConagha claimed the top spot in the 100 butterfly (54.71) and 50 back (25.57). Hailey Tierney had wins in the 50 free (22.80) and 50 fly (24.48). The 1000 free went to Maddie Waggoner (9:53.22).

The team of McCongha, Hazal Ozkan, Tierney and Abby Wanezek swam a time of 1:40.48 to win the 200 medley relay, and in the 400 free relay, Tierney, Bacon, Carlson and Wanezek went 3:21.95 for a dominant win.

Meanwhile, the Bruins’ Ana Jih-Schiff topped the 50 breaststroke (29.01) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.80), and in a finish that came down to one hundredth, UCLA’s Gizem Guvenc overtook UC-San Diego’s Asia Kozan to win the 200 free, 1:49.33 to 1:49.34.

The Wisconsin men took first place in every event against UC-San Diego, beginning with Taiko Torepe-OrmsbyMatthew SegalAndrew Benson and Ben Wiegand securing first place in the 200 medley relay in 1:28.02. Nathan Welker was a double winner, touching first in the 100 back (49.28) and 50 back (23.07), while Dominik Mark Torok also touched first twice, in the 100 fly (48.47) and 1000 free (9:15.07). Andrew Benson was the winner of the 100 breast (54.37) and 100 IM (48.99). Torepe-Ormsby hit the wall in 20.04 for a 50 free win, and he later won the 50 fly (22.29).

Yigit Aslan won the 500 free (4:27.79) while Wiegand touched first in the 50 breast (25.22) and Luukas Vainio grabbed first in the 200 free (1:38.09). Chris Morris won the 100 free (45.24), and Zach Ward took the 200 IM (1:50.88). Swimming exhibition, the team of Benson, Morris, Vainio and Torepe-Ormsby finished off the meet with a first-place result in the 400 free relay (3:00.20).
