Phoebe Bacon, Dominik Torok Double as Wisconsin Sweeps Michigan and Arizona

The second day of a tri-meet with Wisconsin hosting Michigan and Arizona at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center went the way of the Badgers, with the Phoebe Bacon and the Wisconsin women dominating both opponents while the men cruised over Arizona but squeaked out a 185-to-168 win over Michigan for the school’s first win in the series since 1980-1981. Additionally, Michigan swept the Wildcats.

Bacon, who won the 200 back and 100 fly for Wisconsin on day one, opened Saturday’s action by pacing a 200 medley relay win, with Hazal OzkanMackenzie McConagha and Hailey Tierney following in a 1:39.64 effort, beating Michigan’s top team by four tenths after every Badgers swimmer slightly out-split their Wolverine counterpart. Bacon then topped the 200 IM (2:00.47) and 100 backstroke (53.37).

Wisconsin also got a 1-2 finish in the 500 freestyle from Abby Carlson (4:48.23) and Paige McKenna (4:52.05), and Ozkan won the 100 breast (1:02.53). The team of Blair Stoneburg, Tierney, Bacon and Carlson swam a time of 3:19.88 for a 400 free relay win.

For Michigan, Lindsay Flynn topped the 100 free (49.47), and Arizona’s Julia Heimstead was the only swimmer to break 2:00 in the 200 fly, as she touched in 1:59.80 to overtake Michigan’s Hannah Bellard (2:00.25).

The men’s meet saw Wisconsin’s Dominik Torok use a brilliant finish to beat out a pair of Michigan stars in the 200 IM. Torek split 25.30 over the final two lengths to touch in 1:46.99, just ahead of Michigan’s Eitan Ben-Shitrit (1:47.32) and Gal Groumi (1:47.59). Later in the day, Torok again used his back half to secure a win, topping the 200 fly in 1:45.50.

Also for the Badgers, Yigit Aslan won the 500 free in 4:27.00, and Matthew Segal took first in the 100 breast in 54.19, holding off Michigan’s Brendan Fitzpatrick (54.42).

Michigan won both relays on day two, with Jack Wilkening, Fitzpatrick, Groumi and Bence Szabados taking the 200 medley in 1:27.08 to begin the session before Szabados, Wilkening, Ben-Shitrit and Groumi clocked 2:55.44 for a 400 free relay triumph. Individually, Wilkening won the 100 back (46.99). Arizona’s lone men’s win came courtesy of Ralph Daleiden in the 100 free (43.05).
