Pennsylvania Sprinter Mason Gonzalez Gives Verbal Commitment to Stanford
NEW COMMIT: Pennsylvania high school state champion Mason Gonzalez has verbally committed to swim for Stanford University beginning in the 2018-2019 season. Gonzalez is a rising senior at North Allegheny Senior High School.
At the 2017 Pennsylvania AAA state championships Gonzalez touched in 19.99 to pick up 50 freestyle gold. He followed that up with a 43.62 in the 100 freestyle. He also anchored the team’s 200 medley relay to victory. Both of those times were lifetime bests. Gonzalez trains with Allegheny North Swim Club. He is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
His best times are:
- 50 Free 19.99
- 100 Free 43.62
- 200 Free 1:37.91
- 100 Fly 49.96
At the 2017 Pac-12 Championships Perry would have been a 100 freestyle B finalist. He also would have made the 50 free C final in which junior Sam Perry was runner up and Stanford’s only point scorer. Gonzalez also could have made the 200 free C final. Two of Stanford’s four point scorers in that event were freshman- Grant Shoults and James Murphy. Gonzalez should overlap with that duo for two years.
Gonzalez said of his decision,
“Stanford is the perfect combination of both athletics and academics, with a swimming team that shares a similar mentality. I know here I can achieve my goals both in and out of the pool, all while on a beautiful campus as well! I can’t wait to be a part of the Stanford community. Go Trees!”
Gonzalez joins a Cardinal class that includes Jack LeVant and David Madej.
Lisa Buese Gani and Tricia Miller Forde. He’ll be swimming with Brooke in a year. In our area and fast!
