Penn State’s Shane Ryan Heads To Big Ten Conference Meet With Swimmer of the Week Honor

ROSEMONT – With the Big Ten conference swimming and diving championships just around the corner, this week’s honors from the conference headquarters is likely giving six athletes a major boost of confidence heading into the big meet. Shane Ryan won his first weekly honor this season, while Ivy Martin picked up another in a series of recognitions as she wraps up her collegiate career.
Big Ten Male Swimmer of the Week: Shane Ryan, Penn State
• Collected three first-place touches in the Virginia Tech Invite
• Finished first in the 100 backstroke (46.26), 50 freestyle (20.37) and 100 freestyle (43.70)
• Claimed NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle
• Earns his second career Swimmer of the Week honor
Big Ten Female Swimmer of the Week: Ivy Martin, Wisconsin
• Collected a combined six first-place finishes in Wisconsin’s dual meets against Milwaukee and Green Bay
• Finished first in the 50 freestyle (22.36), 200 freestyle relay (1:30.64) and 200 medley relay (1:40.43) against Milwaukee
• Added three first-place touches in the 100 backstroke (54.75), 200 freestyle relay (1:33.38) and 200 medley relay (1:42.62) against Green Bay
• Posted two NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke
• Earns her 10th career Swimmer of the Week award
Big Ten Male Diver of the Week: Stephen Ettiene, Ohio State
• Secured a first- and second-place finish in the one-meter and three-meter diving events in Ohio State’s dual meet win over Wright State
• Scored 392.33 points in one-meter diving and 396.38 points in the three-meter event
• Tallied NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
• Earns his third Diver of the Week honor
Big Ten Female Diver of the Week: Yu Zhou, Minnesota
• Swept the springboard diving events in the Minnesota Challenge
• Scored 328.80 points in the one-meter event and totaled 365.10 points in three-meter diving
• Secured two NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores
• Earns her third Diver of the Week award
Big Ten Male Freshman of the Week: Paul Powers, Michigan
• Earned three first-place finishes in Michigan’s dual meet win over Michigan State
• Finished first in the 50 backstroke (23.26), 200 freestyle relay (1:21.47) and 400 freestyle relay (2:57.28)
• Earns his second Freshman of the Week award
Big Ten Female Freshman of the Week: Brittany Menninger, Ohio State
• Claimed a first- and second-place finish in Ohio State’s dual meet win over Wright State
• Finished first in one-meter diving (306.83) and second in the three-meter event (331.50)
• Secured two NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores
• Earns her first Freshman of the Week award
