Penn State, Purdue Lead First Big Ten Weekly Awards of Year
Penn State and Purdue took home two honors each in leading the first Big Ten Weekly Awards of the 2022-23 season.
Penn State’s Victor Baganha was named the men’s swimmer of the week, with freshmen Marciano Lazzerini and Julia Meisner were each recognized as the top rookies. Purdue produced the women’s swimmer of the week in Maggie Love, and the men’s diver of the week in Jordan Rzepka. Minnesota’s Joy Zhu was named the women’s diver of the week.
Baganha, a sophomore from Brazil, won the 50 free and 100 fly in a tri-meet with Navy and Boston College. His times rank third and fourth, respectively, in the conference this season. He’s the first Penn State men’s swimmer of the week in three years (Michael Daly, Oct. 16, 2019).
Rzepka won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events in a meet with Missouri. The sophomore wins his second career Diver of the Week award.
Lazzerini won the 100 breast in the Penn State tri-meet. With Baganha, the Chilean also helped lead the 200 medley relay to victory.
Love, a sophomore, posted three career-best times against Missouri. She won the 100 breast and 200 individual medley, posting the sixth- and ninth-fastest times, respectively, in Boilermakers history in those events.
Zhu picked up a pair of wins in a tri-meet with Nebraska and South Dakota. The senior from China scored 291.00 to win 1-meter and 324.35 on 3-meter.
Meisner was part of a couple of wins for the Nittany Lions against BC and Navy. She won the 200 fly and 200 IM in that meet.
