Penn State Picks Up Verbal from Sprinter Catherine Stanford of Long Beach Aquatics
NEW COMMIT: Penn State has earned another verbal commitment for the fall of 2020, this time from Oceanside, N.Y. native Catherine Stanford. She will join Abby Henderson, Morgan Rinn, Lizzie Danforth and Mary Brinker in State College as members of the class of 2024.
A talented sprinter, Stanford does her club swimming with Long Beach Aquatics and owns the Winter Juniors cut in the 50 free and 100 free. She most recently achieved a pair of best times at NCSAs where her she placed 30th in both the 50 free and 100 free after finishing top-10 in those events at Metropolitan SCY Seniors. Last summer, she recorded four top-15 finishes at Metropolitan LCM Seniors before going on to earn silver medals in the 50m/100m free combo at Eastern Zone Seniors.
Also competing for Oceanside Senior High School, Stanford is a six-time New York Federation Championship finalist. She was the runner-up in both the 50 free and 100 free as a junior after placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season. She also owns the Nassau County record in the 50 free.
She told Swimming World:
“So excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at Penn State University. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my family, coaches and friends. I cannot wait to become a part of the Nittany Lions! #WEARE”
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 23.30
- 100 free – 50.70
- 200 free – 1:52.26
- 100 fly – 56.27
- 200 IM – 2:06.84
Stanford will make an immediate impact both individually and on relays when she suits up for the Nittany Lions at the start of the 2020-21 season as her best times already rank near the top of their lineup. She’ll add her talents to a training group that’ll be lead by Kathleen Sheridan, Elizabeth Gaspari and Madison Ledwith.
