Penn State Collects First 2020 Verbal From Sprinter Mary Brinker
NEW COMMIT: East Aurora, N.Y. native and current high school junior Mary Brinker has handed Penn State their first verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season.
Primarily a sprint freestyler, Brinker does her club swimming with Town Wreckers Swim Team and owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 50 free. She most recently competed at NCSAs where she recorded a pair of best times and capped off her long course season by placing fourth in the 50m free at Eastern Zones. Also competing for East Aurora High School, Brinker is a five-time New York Federation Championships finalist. She finished third in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 free as a junior after placing eighth and 16th, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.
She told Swimming World:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and begin my studies at Penn State! The coaches and team were so welcoming that I saw myself fitting right in. After visiting I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. Thank you to all my coaches, teammates and family for all the support. I can’t wait to be part of such an amazing team.”
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 23.47
- 100 free – 51.95
- 200 free – 1:54.07
When she suits up for the Nittany Lions as a member of the class of 2024, Brinker will add valuable depth to their freestyle events as well as their sprint relays. Her best 50 free time would’ve ranked fourth on Penn State’s lineup last season and she’ll have two years of overlap with top returning sprinter Madison Ledwith.
