Paris Olympics: China’s Xie Siyi, Wang Zongyuan Go 1-2 on 3-Meter

olympics

China continued to dominate diving at the 2024 Paris Olympics and is aiming for history.

Xie Siyi claimed gold on the 3-meter springboard for the second consecutive Olympic Games and led another 1-2 finish for the Chinese.

Wang Zongyuan took the silver for the second consecutive Olympics. He had not lost a competition since the Tokyo Games.

It was China’s sixth gold medal in diving in Paris as the country is aiming for a sweep of all eight events, something that has never been done before.

“The pressure is something that every athlete needs to overcome,” Xie said through an interpreter. “I would rather see the pressure as motivation.”

China has won 53 of 70 gold medals in diving since the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Since the 2008 Beijing Games, China has won 33 of 38 gold medals in the sport.

Xie scored 543.60 points in the finals, Wang had 530.20 and 20-year-old Osmar Olvera of Mexico earned the bronze with a score of 500.40.

China has won the men’s 3-meter in seven of the past eight Olympics, all but 2012.

Olvera took silver earlier in the Olympics in men’s 3-meter synchronized while paired with Juan Celaya. Mexico has won 17 medals in diving, its highest total in any sport.

Carson Tyler of the U.S. was fourth with a score of 429.25.
