Paris Olympics: Ariarne Titmus, Mollie O’Callaghan in for Aussies; U.S. Makes 3 Changes (800 Free Relay)

As expected, Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan are in for the Australians Thursday night as they chase a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

O’Callaghan won gold and Titmus silver in the 200 free. Lani Pallister and Brianna Throssell earned their way into the finals squad after strong prelims swims.

The U.S. didn’t have many of those, so Erin Gemmell is the lone survivor from the prelims quartet. She joins Claire Weinstein, Paige Madden and Katie Ledecky. Gemmell will anchor. Ledecky won the event at U.S. trails with Weinstein second, Madden third and Gemmell fourth. Weinstein finished eighth and Gemmell ninth in Paris.

China is the defending Olympic champion. They only bring in two members of that squad, with Yang Junxuan and Li Bingji added from prelims. They’ll put those two in the first two legs. Not added is Zhang Yufei, who has the 200 butterfly final earlier in the session and hasn’t quite matched her imperious form from Tokyo.

Canada used its best 200 freestyler in Mary-Sophie Harvey, who finished fourth in the Paris, in prelims. She’ll be joined in finals by Summer McIntosh, who will swim third after contesting the final of the women’s 200 fly. Julie Brousseau gets the anchor. No sign of Penny Oleksiak.

Great Britain makes one change, with Freya Colbert in for Medi Harris.

Hungary will roll with the same lineup – Nikolett Padar, Minna Abraham, Ajna Kesely and Panna Ugrai – that placed them second in prelims. Brazil, fifth in prelims, likewise has the same four, as does New Zealand.
