Paralympics Day 9 Finals: Leanne Smith Breaks World Record; Raleigh-Crossley Wins Again

Day 9 of the 2024 Paralympic Games continued from La Defense Arena in Paris.

China’s Guo Jincheng and Lu Dong, USA’s Leanne Smith and Canada’s Sebastian Massabie set world records while USA’s Christie Raleigh-Crossley lead a group of Paralympic records broken.

Paralympics: Men’s 400 Free S6 Final

Brazil’s Talisson Henrique Glock won the first gold medal of the day, getting to the wall in 4:49.55 to break the Americas record in the 400 free S6 classification.

Italy’s Antonio Fantin took the silver in 4:49.99 and Mexico’s Jesus Alberto Gutierrez Bermudez earned the bronze in 5:07.00.

Paralympics: Women’s 400 Free S6 Final

China’s Jiang Yuyan claimed the gold medal in the women’s 400 free, finishing in 5:12.07.

Switzerland’s Nora Meister took the silver in 5:16.33 and Great Britain’s Maisie Summers-Newton won the bronze in 5:21.36.

 

Paralympics: Men’s 50 Butterfly S5 Finals

China swept the podium in the men’s 50 butterfly S5, led by Guo Jingcheng, who broke the world record to win in 20.38.

Yuan Weiji took the silver in 30.71 and Wang Lichao claimed the bronze in 30.89.

 

Paralympics: Women’s 50 Butterfly S5 Final

China’s Lu Dong won the women’s butterfly, also in a world record, leading a 1-2 finish for China.

Lu finished in 38.17 and He Shenggao took the silver.

Turkey’s Sevilay Ozturk took the bronze in 43.70.

Paralympics: Men’s 100 Backstroke S10 Final

Olivier van de Voort of the Netherlands took the gold medal in 59.09 to best the field in the S10 class.

Italy’s Stefano Raimondi took the silver in 59.29, followed by Australia’s Thomas Gallagher, who took bronze in 1:01.34.

 

Paralympics: Women’s 100 Backstroke S10 Final

Hungary’s Bianka Pap was golden in the women’s 100 backstroke, getting to the wall in 1:07.97.

U.S. swimmer Alexandra Truwit took the silver in 1:08.59.

France’s Emeline Pierre got the bronze in 1:09.44.

 

Paralympics: Men’s 100 Butterfly S9 Final

Simone Barlaam broke the European record to earn gold in the 100 butterfly, getting to the wall in 57.99.

Australia took 2-3 with Timothy Hodge (1:00.03) and Lewis Bishop (1:01.08).

Paralympics: Women’s 100 Butterfly S9 Final

USA’s Christie Raleigh-Crossley broke the Paralympic record to win the gold medal.

She got to the wall in 1:05.19. It was her second gold medal of the week.

Hungary’s Zsofia Konkoly took the silver in 1:06.79.

Australia’s Emily Beecroft earned the bronze in 1:07.96.

 

Paralympics: Men’s 100 Backstroke S14 Final

Australia’s Benjamin Hance won the gold medal in 57.04 in the S14 class.

Brazil’s Gabriel Bandeira broke the American record to take the silver in 58.54.

Great Britain’s Mark Tompsett took the bronze in 59.21.

 

Paralympics: Women’s 100 Backstroke S14 Final

Great Britain’s Poppy Maskill claimed the gold in the women’s 100 back in 1:05.74, leading a 1-3 finish for Great Britain.

Olivia Newman-Baronius took the bronze in 1:08.74.

The silver went to Valeriia Shabalina in 1:06.68.

 

Paralympics: Men’s 50 Freestyle S3 Final

Turkey’s Umut Unlu earned gold with a swim of 44.83 in the S3 class.

Ukraine’s Denys Ostapchenko took the silver medal in 45.14.

Germany’s Josia Topf got to the wall in 45.61 to take the bronze.

Paralympics: Men’s 50 Free S4 Final

Canada’s Sebastian Massabie broke the world record in the S4 class. He got to the wall in 35.61.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Takayuki Suzuki broke the Asian record to take the silver medal in 36.85.

Israel’s Ami Omer Dadaon took the bronze in 37.11.

 

Paralympics: Women’s 50 Free S4 Final

U.S. star Leanne Smith broke the world record to win the women’s 50 free in the S4 class.

Smith got to the wall in 40.03 to earn the gold medal.

Germany’s Tanja Scholz won the silver in 40.75, followed by Australia’s Rachael Watson claimed bronze in 41.17.

 

Paralympics: Men’s 100 Butterfly S11 Final

Japan’s Keiichi Kimura broke the Paralympic record to win gold in the 100 butterfly. He got to the wall in 1:00.90.

Ukraine’s Danylo Chufarov took the silver medal in 1:02.86.

Japan’s Uchu Tomita took the bronze in 1:03.89.

 

Paralympics: Men’s 100 Free S8 Final

Australia’s Callum Simpson earned the last gold medal of the day, finishing the 100 free S8 in 58.23.

USA’s Noah Jaffe brok the American record to take the silver in 58.25.

Italy’s Alberto Amodeo took the bronze in 58.30.
