Paralympic Medalist Ali Truwit Taking 2025 Off from Competition
Ali Truwit, who won two silver medals at the Paris Paralympics in 2024, is taking the year off from competition but will continue training while focusing on other endeavors.
Truwit was not listed among the 2025 Paralympic national team released by U.S. Paralympic Swimming this week, the only female Paris medalist not in the group. She confirmed to Swimming World that she’s taking a step back from competition for 2025, including September’s World Championships, but will still train with an eye toward competing in the future.
Truwit, 24, is devoting time to her Stronger Than You Think Foundation, which is launching initiatives related to the Paralympic movement and water safety. Truwit won silver medals in the S10 400 freestyle and S10 100 backstroke in Paris.
The Yale grad was an All-Ivy League performer for the Bulldogs in the distance events. She lost her foot and part of her lower leg in May 2023 in a shark attack in the waters off Turks and Caicos. She’s relatively new to both paralympic swimming and to life with her prosthetic, and part of the step back from competition is to have time to process and adapt to that new life. A cognitive science major who was originally planning to attend business school and start a career in business analytics, she has a number of projects and ventures in progress at the moment, including a passion for baking, a documentary, a podcast and a book.
She started the Stronger Than You Think Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit to support individuals with limb loss and extend access to water safety. It has raised money given out in the form of grants to water safety programs. Truwit is also using the foundation to advocate for the Paralympic movement and to ease access to prosthetics for swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
