GOLD COAST, Australia, August 21. ANOTHER Pan Pacific Championship record fell this morning as USA’s Nathan Adrian powered his way to a 48.05 in prelims of the 100-meter freestyle. that swim beat his 48.15 set back in 2010 when he won this race four years ago. Adrian is still looking for that elusive 47 this year, but his swim this morning lowered his third-ranked season best of 48.08 from the Barcelona stop of the Mare Nostrum.
James Magnussen (47.59) and Cameron McEvoy (47.65) are the only two swimmers to put up 47s this year. Magnussen made the A final with a second-place time of 48.25, while McEvoy also made the championship heat with a fourth-place 48.49.
Michael Phelps, the Greatest of All Time, definitely hit his wall as he had the fastest final 50 meters of the morning to qualify third in 48.45. He came home in 24.77 to make sure he made the big final.
USA’s Ryan Lochte was bumped to the B final with a fifth-place 58.90 due to the two-per-country rule, while Brazil’s Joao de Lucca made the A final in 49.02 for sixth. Brazil’s Nicolas Oliveira (8th, 49.13), Japan’s Katsumi Nakamura (13th, 49.30) and Japan’s Shinri Shioura (15th, 49.53) also picked up spots in the A final after a host of swimmers were relegated due to the two-per-country rule.
