Pan Pacific Championships, Day 1 Prelims: Luka Mijatovic Leads in Both 200 Free, 800 Free
Two years again in Hawaii, future Olympians like Thomas Heilman, Tomoyuki Matsushita, Alex Shackell and Erin Gemmell tested themselves internationally at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. An early test of the emerging depth in countries lining the Pacific Ocean that happen to be some of the world’s powers, it’s a fitting look, just after the Paris Olympics, at who could be on that stage four years from now in Los Angeles.
The first morning session of the 2024 meet, kicking off in Canberra, Australia, offered a lot of American speed, with Luka Mijatovic leading the way.
Mijatovic set the top time in prelims of the boys 200 freestyle, nearly taking down a national age-group record, and was quickest in the first of two heats of the 800 free ahead of the timed final later in the day, in the first morning at the Pool at Bruce ACT.
The meet stretches through Saturday, with prelims at 9 a.m. local time (7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time the night before) and finals at 5 p.m. local (3 a.m. EDT).
A reminder that only two swimmers from each nation can qualify for the top eight in each event. Finals will include the fastest heat of the boys 800 free, timed finals of the girls 1,500 free and the mixed 400 medley relay.
A look at the first prelims session:
Girls 200 freestyle
The United States set the top two times in prelims, with Madi Mintenko leading the way in 1:58.81 and Kennedi Dobson second in 1:58.90. Two Aussies got under the two-minute mark, with Inez Miller third and Milla Jansen fourth. Amelia Weber of Australia was the fifth overall time but is limited to the B final.
