Paige Hetrick, Daria Golovaty Lead Louisville Past Notre Dame
Paige Hetrick and Daria Golovaty won two individual races each as Louisville claimed a 220-78 win over Louisville in an extended dual meet Friday in South Bend.
The meet featured no diving but three relays, and it produced a record for the host Irish in the opening one. Louisville won the 200 freestyle relay to start the meet, going 1:27.70, but the Notre Dame quartet was close behind in 1:27.84. The quartet of Hollie Widdows, Jess Geriane, Imogen Meers and Madelyn Christman took down by .97 seconds the 2018 school record.
The rest of the day belonged to Louisville, almost to a race. Golovaty led a 1-2-3 result in the 200 free with a winning time of 1:44.93, edging teammate Fernanda Gomes Celidonio by .09 seconds. Golovaty was second to Gabi Albiero’s 48.76 in the 100 free, then the freshman won the 500 in 4:43.13.
Hetrick did the backstroke double, winning the 100 in 52.79 and the 200 in 1:53.74. Christman was second in both.
Gomes Celidonio won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.50 after having been second in the 100 IM to Ella Welch. Welch and Albiero, who also won the 100 butterfly, was on Louisville’s winning 200 free relay. That squad was anchored by Julia Dennis, who went 21.98 to edge Welch in the 50 free. Dennis anchored the winning 200 medley relay. She and Welch were on the victorious 400 free relay, as well, with Caroline Larsen the only swimmer on all three winning relays.
Mia Cheatwood swept breaststroke. Tristen Ulett won the 200 fly and was second in the 200 IM.
Notre Dame’s only individual win came in the 1,000 free, thanks to Maggie Graves’ time of 9:50.14. Teammate Sophia Karras was second. Widdows finished second in the 100 fly, and Mary Cate Pruitt was the runner-up in the 500.
