Pacific 10 Championships: Julia Smit Shoots Down Longstanding Summer Sanders NCAA Record

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, February 27. DURING the third evening of swimming at the Pacific 10 Championships, Stanford's Julia Smit added the women's 400-yard IM NCAA record to her coffers.

After setting the NCAA and American record in the women's 200-yard IM with a 1:53.11 earlier in the meet, Smit blazed to a 4:01.56 in the longer distance medley for an NCAA record.

The readout eclipsed the 4:02.28 set by the legendary Summer Sanders back at the 1992 NCAA Championships held in Austin, Texas.

The mark came up a bit short of Dagny Knutson's blistering fast American record of 4:00.62 set last December at the USA Swimming Short Course Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
