Pac-12 Women’s Championships, Day Four Finals: Rachel Klinker, Isabelle Stadden Help Cal Secure Team Title

The Cal women have captured the Pac-12 team title in women’s swimming and diving for 2023-24, the last such title that will be awarded in the current incarnation of the conference as all but two teams prepare to relocate to other leagues for the 2024-25 school year. Stanford has been the dominant women’s team in the Pac-12 in recent years, but the Golden Bears used depth and timely wins over the three-and-a-half day meet in Federal Way, Wash., to secure first place.

This marks the first time Cal has won the conference since 2021 and the first time since Dave Durden, the men’s head coach at Cal since the 2007-08 season, took over the women’s program prior to last season. Cal finished with 1397.5 points to easily defeat its closest rivals, with wins on the final night by veterans Isabelle Stadden (200 backstroke) and Rachel Klinker (200 butterfly) helping Cal punctuate the triumph.

Meanwhile, the University of Southern California came from 25.5 points down entering the final night to pass Stanford and take second place overall. USC pulled off the comeback by winning four of the final five events, courtesy of Minna AbrahamKaitlyn Dobler, diver Nike Agunbiade and the Trojans’ 400 free relay, as Abraham’s epic anchor leg put USC on the wall two hundredths clear of the Cardinal. USC finished with 1291 points, eight ahead of Stanford’s 1283.

The first win of the night went to Stanford’s Aurora Roghair, who was well behind Arizona State’s Deniz Ertan for much of the race before turning on the jets over the second half on the way to a title. Ertan built an advantage of three seconds in the early going of the race, but around the halfway point, Roghair began chipping away at that lead.

At the 1100-yard mark, Roghair was in front by seven hundredths, and she would never trail again. 29-low splits over the first half of the race turned into 28-mid and even 28-low repeats as she negative-split the race by an enormous margin and began pulling away from Ertan until she finally won the race by 12 seconds.

Roghair’s final time was 15:46.35, the second-quickest mark in the country this season behind the 15:40.96 that Georgia’s Abby McCulloh swam at last week’s SEC Championships. Roghair beat her own season best of 15:52.83 by 6.5 seconds. Ertan came in second at 15:58.40, which ranks 12th in the country, while her ASU teammate Alexa Reyna placed third in 16:14.45.

200 Backstroke

For the third time in her career, Isabelle Stadden is the Pac-12 champion in the 200 backstroke. The Cal senior jumped out to a one-and-a-half-second lead at the halfway point and continued pulling away down the stretch. Stadden has been as fast as 1:49.21 in the 200 back so far this season, making her one of three swimmers to crack 1:50 in the event (along with Florida’s Bella Sims and Tennessee’s Josephine Fuller), and here, she came up just short of getting under 1:50 again.

Stadden posted a time of 1:50.16, which was 2.31 seconds clear of the second-place swimmer, Stanford’s Natalie Mannion, who clocked 1:52.47. Third went to UCLA’s Rosie Murphy in 1:53.13 while Cal added more important points in pursuit of a Pac-12 title as Mia Motekaitis tookfourth in 1:53.60.

100 Freestyle

The University of Southern California Trojans showed off their depth in the 100 free, with four swimmers qualifying for the A-final while two of them occupied the top-two spots in the final. Freshman Minna Abraham and fifth-year swimmer Vasilissa Buinaia were nearly neck-and-neck throughout the final, with Buinaia ahead by seven hundredths at the halfway point and eight hundredths entering the last lap. But Abraham was just a touch quicker on the way home as she claimed her second individual title this week.

Abraham took the win in 47.69, three hundredths clear of Buinaia’s 47.72. Abraham added to her earlier dominant win in the 200 free. Cal’s Eloise Riley was third in 48.02, just ahead of Stanford’s Amy Tang (48.08), while the Trojans also had Anicka Delgado (fifth, 48.20) and Claire Tuggle (seventh, 48.65) racing in the A-final.

200 Breaststroke

The 200 breast brought a second consecutive win for USC and a breaststroke sweep for Kaitlyn Dobler, better known for her abilities in the 100-yard race but no slouch in the 200. Dobler received an early challenge from Cal’s Hannah Brunzell, and then Stanford freshman Caroline Bricker, already the winner of the 200 IM and 400 IM at Pac-12s, tried to make a run down the stretch, but Dobler had enough to score the win.

Dobler clocked 2:06.58, just off her season best of 2:06.28, which now ranks sixth in the country after Lydia Jacoby’s win in the event at the Big 12 Championships Saturday evening. Bricker took second in 2:07.20, a bit off her top time of 2:06.85 that ranks eighth nationally, while third went to Washington State’s Emily Lundgren in 2:07.44.

The Trojans’ success in the 100 free combined with Dobler’s win cut Stanford’s advantage over USC for second place to just 11 points, but Cal continued wracking up points for the team competition: the Golden Bears finished fourth, fifth and sixth here with Alicia Henry (2:07.89), Brunzell (2:08.82) and Abby Herscu (2:09.53).

200 Butterfly

At the end of a back-and-forth final of the 200 fly, Cal’s Rachel Klinker had enough in the tank to finish off a victory in her last conference-championship race. Klinker, in the midst of a breakout season after she placed fourth in the 200-meter fly at the World Championships two-and-a-half weeks ago, trailed Arizona State’s Lindsay Looney and Stanford’s Lillie Nordmann early on but took over on the second 50 and never looked back.

Klinker got to the wall in 1:51.74, four tenths clear of Looney’s 1:52.14, with Nordmann finishing third in 1:52.38. Klinker now ranks fifth in the country, trailing Virginia’s Alex Walsh, the Texas duo of Emma Sticklen and Kelly Pash and Florida’s Bella Sims. Looney moved up to seventh in the national rankings while Nordmann is eighth.

Notably, Stanford had three swimmers in the A-final, with Charlotte Hook placing third in 1:53.23, a time that would have been good enough for a spot in the A-final at last year’s NCAAs, while Lucy Bell was seventh (1:54.75), giving the Cardinal an edge against USC in the battle for second place in the team race. But with Klinker and Leah Polonsky (fifth, 1:54.25) in the A-final, Cal cannot be beaten.

USC fifth-year Nike Agunbiade was victorious on the platform with a final score of 353.60, leaving USC’s Eden Cheng in second place at 323.75. The Trojans made it a 1-3 finish as Lilia Castanon took third (286.35), providing a big infusion of points that will make a difference in USC’s quest to overtake Stanford for second place in the team competition.

400 Freestyle Relay

The battle for second place overall between USC and Stanford came down to the final relay, and in a stunning finish decided by just two hundredths, the Trojans got to the wall first.

Early on in the top heat of the 400 free relay, USC had the lead thanks to veterans Vasilissa Buinaia and Anicka Delgado, but Claire Tuggle could not keep pace on the third leg as Stanford’s Gigi Johnson split 47.49 to give the Cardinal a half-second lead entering the anchor leg. But then, USC freshman Minna Abraham had a surge left. Already the winner of the 200 free Friday evening and the 100 free earlier Friday, Abraham split 46.82 to chase down Stanford’s Amy Tang and reach the wall ahead.

USC’s quartet clocked 3:11.09, with Stanford’s team, which included Anna Shaw and Lillie Nordmann proceeding Johnson and Tang, went 3:11.11. That gave USC 64 points and Stanford 56, a 16-point swing that provided the Trojans with enough points to move ahead of Stanford in the team standings by eight points and secure the second-place trophy.

Third in the race went to Cal, with Eloise RileyLeah PolonskyIsabelle Stadden and Mia Motekaitis combining for a time of 3:12.27. Stadden split 47.81 for Cal to briefly move into second place, but the results here would not matter as Cal was more than 100 points clear of any other team entering the final event.
