Pac-12 Women’s Championships Day 3 Prelims: USC, Stanford Try to Keep Pace With Cal

The 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued with the Day 3 prelims from Federal Way, Washington.

The Day 3 events are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

Pac-12 Women’s 400 IM

After winning the 200 IM conference title, Stanford freshman Caroline Bricker put together a strong 400 IM in prelims to take the top seed into finals.

Bricker went a 4:05.55 to hold off the field by three seconds.

UCLA took the next two spots with Paige MacEachern in 4:08.47 and Rosie Murphy in 4:08.88.

Cal freshman Kathryn Hazle took the fourth spot in 4:09.13, followed by USC sophomore Claire Tuggle (4:09.61).

Stanford has two more in the finals with Samantha Tadder taking the sixth seed (4:09.66) and Lucy Bell seventh (4:09.78), ahead of Cal’s Leah Polonsky (4:10.90).

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Butterfly

Cal junior Mia Kragh was the fastest to the wall in the 100 butterfly with a 51.56, about three tenths off of her best time.

Stanford sophomore Gigi Johnson took the second spot in 51.72, while teammate Lillie Nordmann was fourth (51.82) behind USC senior Caroline Famous (51.78).

Arizona senior Julia Heimstead took the fifth spot in 51.91, just ahead of 50 free champion Anicka Delgado of USC (52.07).

A third Stanford swimmer in the finals, Charlotte Hook toko the seventh spot in 52.07, ahead of Cal’s Morgan Brophy (52.19).

Pac-12 Women’s 200 Freestyle

USC freshman Minna Abraham took the top seed in the 200 freestyle, though Stanford took the next three seeds to make a big push in the event.

Abraham touched the wall in 1:43.70, more than two seconds off of her best time.

Stanford took the 2-3-4 seeds with sophomore Kayla Wilson (1:44.09), junior Amy Tang (1:44.13) and junior Aurora Roghair (1:44.19).

Cal grad student Mia Motekaitis took the fifth seed in 1:44.46, followed by Arizona senior Julia Heimstead (1:44.89) and Arizona State’s Lindsay Looney (1:45.06) and Ieva Maluka (1:45.37).

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Breaststroke

USC senior Kaitlyn Dobler cruised to an NCAA A cut in the 100 breaststroke to take the top seed for finals in 57.92.

She was the only swimmer to break 59 seconds and could be closing in on her own meet record of 57.10 set last year. Dobler also holds the overall Pac-12 Conference record at 56.93 set in 2022.

Cal took the 2-3 seeds with Hanna Brunzell (59.09) and Jade Neser (59.45).

UCLA junior Eva Carlson was the fourth seed in 59.78, followed by Stanford freshman Lucy Thomas (59.86).

Washington State sophomore Emily Lundgren grabbed the sixth seed in 1:00.02, followed by Cal junior Alicia Henry (1:00.05) and Arizona sophomore Eleni Gewalt (1:00.54).

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Backstroke

Cal senior Isabelle Stadden took the top seed in the 100 backstroke, as expected, with a time of 51.23, about a second off her seed time.

USC senior Caroline Famous was just behind in 51.44, the only other swimmer to break 52 seconds during the morning swim.

Stanford sophomore Natalie Mannion took the third seed in 52.34, followed by UCLA sophomore Fay Lustria (52.89), Cal senior Isabella Riley (53.30), Stanford sophomore Gigi Johnson (53.32), UCLA freshman Amy Zhang (53.39) and Arizona State senior Katrina Marty (53.69).
