Pac-12 Women’s Championships Day 3 Finals: Caroline Bricker Keeps Stanford 400 IM Tradition

The 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued with the Day 3 finals from Federal Way, Washington.

The Day 3 events are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke. 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay.

Cal entered the day with the lead and kept it despite some wins and strong performances from Stanford and USC.

Pac-12 Women’s 400 IM

Stanford’s Caroline Bricker kept the 400 IM Cardinal tradition going with a conference championships, joining the likes of Katie Ledecky and Ella Eastin as recent winners.

The freshman won the race in 4:02.32, dropping three seconds from her prelims time and winning the race by a little more than a second.

UCLA junior Paige MacEachern also had an NCAA A cut with a time of 4:03.47 to finish second.

Cal junior Leah Polonsky moved up from the eighth seed to take third with a 4:05.11, dropping nearly six seconds from the morning.

UCLA sophomore Rosie Murphy finished fourth in 4:06.00, followed by USC sophomore Claire Tuggle (4:08.01), Cal freshman Kathryn Hazle (4:08.12).

Stanford also went 7-8 with Lucy Bell (4:09.86) and Samantha Tadder (4:11.21).

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Butterfly

Cal’s Mia Kragh helped the Golden Bears increase their lead with a win in the 100 butterfly.

The junior was the only swimmer in the field to break 51 seconds and got to the wall in 50.89.

Stanford took the next two spots as the Cardinals continue to try to hang with Cal. Sophomore Gigi Johnson took second in 51.17, while junior Lillie Nordmann was third in 51.58. Charlotte Hook also took sixth for the Cardinal in 51.89.

USC’s Caroline Famous finished fourth in 51.64, followed by Cal junior Morgan Brophy (51.75.

USC senior Anicka Delgado, the 50 free champion, took seventh in 52.01, while Arizona senior Julia Heimstead was eighth in 52.03.

Pac-12 Women’s 200 Freestyle

It was USC’s turn to make a move as the chase of Cal continued.

Trojan freshman Minna Abraham claimed the conference title in the 200 freestyle, swimming to a 1:42.42 NCAA A cut in the event.

Stanford took three of the next four spots. Sophomore Kayla Wilson was second in 1:43.24, followed by Aurora Roghair (1:43.48). Amy Tang was fifth (1:43.95).

Arizona State sophomore Ieva Maluka finished fourth in 1:43.94. Teammate Lindsay Looney took sixth in 1:44.15.

Cal grad student Mia Motekaitis took seventh in 1:44.53 and Arizona’s Julia Heimstead took eighth in 1:46.60.

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Two in a row for the Trojans as Kaitlyn Dobler won the 100 breaststroke once again. Dobler won the event in an NCAA A cut of 57.51.

Washington State’s Emily Lundgren took second in 59.45.

Cal scored big points to maintain the lead was the Golden Bears went 3-4-5 with Hannah Brunzell (59.47), Jade Neser (59.56) and Alicia Henry (59.58).

Stanford freshman Lucy Thomas was sixth in 59.60, followed by UCLA junior Eva Carlson (59.62) and Arizona sophomore Eleni Gewalt (1:00.13).

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Backstroke

Cal senior Isabelle Stadden claimed victory in the 100 backstroke, turning in an NCAA A cut time of 50.39.

USC senior Caroline Famous was second in 50.90, the only other swimmer in the field to break 52 seconds.

Stanford went 3-4 with Natalie Mannion (52.38) and Gigi Johnson (52.86).

UCLA sophomore Fay Lustria was fifth (53.02), followed by Arizona State’s Katrina Marty (53.48), UCLA’s Amy Zhang (53.71) and Cal’s Isabella Riley (53.87).

Pac-12 Women’s 400 Medley Relay

USC claimed another relay title, this time in the 400 medley.

The Trojans finished with an NCAA A cut time of 3:27.28 behind Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Minna Abraham.

Cal’s Isabelle Stadden, Hannah Brunzell, Mia Kragh and Leah Polonsky took second in 3:28.05, also an A cut.

Stanford’s Natalie Mannion, Lucy Thomas, Gigi Johnson and Lillie Nordmann took third in 3:31.64.
