There have been no scratches.

In the men’s 400 IM, the Americans and Japanese took the top four spots this morning. The field of eight will battle for the first swimming medals available in Rio.

A tight field heads into finals of the men’s 400 freestyle, where three more medals are on the line. China’s Sun Yang is the reigning Olympic champion in this event and will be looking to sneak past the USA’s Conor Dwyer’s strong preliminary showing.

In tonight’s third final, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu will look to challenge the 400 IM world record again, while Maya DiRado of the USA and Mireia Belmonte of Spain will aim to close the gap.

This morning the Australian women set an Olympic record, and only finished a second and a half shy of the world record in the 400 freestyle relay. That mark could be on notice again, especially with the addition of Emma McKeon. The Americans will swap in young sprint stars Abbey Weitzeil and Simone Manuel to spice up their finals relay.
