The Olympic medals have been completed for the upcoming 2024 Paris Games, and each one was crafted with something special.
Each medal is inlaid with an actual piece of the Eiffel Tower.
The winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals at the Olympics and Paralympics will receive this historic take on medals.
The design was revealed on Thursday by the organizers.
The Eiffel Tower pieces were taken from the monument as part of an ongoing upkeep on the tower. As parts are replaced, or changed, pieces will now end up around the necks of medal winners.
The iron pieces embedded in the center of the Olympic medals each weigh 18 grams (about two-thirds of an ounce), according to The Associated Press. They were cut from girders and other bits that were swapped out of the Eiffel Tower during renovations and stored for safekeeping, according to Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee.
“The concept came after a few discussions. We realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower,” Roncin told the AP. “We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Co. to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal?’”
It worked and, as Roncin said, “The dream became reality. It’s really a bit of metal from the Eiffel Tower.”
