Olympian Patrick Callan Joins Coaching Staff at Auburn

Recently retired Olympic swimmer Patrick Callan is beginning his foray into coaching at the college level on staff at Auburn, the school announced Friday.

Callan made the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021. He swam at the University of California and Michigan in college, retiring in April after completing his fifth year with the Golden Bears. He’s adding another prime college swimming destination to his list of home bases.

“I’m very excited to join the Auburn Swimming and Diving family,” Callan said in a university press release. “It’s an unbelievable opportunity to be a part of the program that coach Wochomurka is building, and I’m grateful to be a part of his vision for Auburn. I’m looking forward to using my experience to help make this program better. War Eagle!”

Callan was part of the American men’s 800 free relay at the Tokyo Olympics, swimming in prelims for a squad that finished fourth. He’s been a staple on national teams since his junior years.

A nine-time All-American and three-time All-Big Ten selection, Callan was a part of 800 free relays that won Big Ten titles twice at Michigan. He also was part of a Cal relay that won bronze at NCAAs this year. He was also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten and a two-time Michigan Athletic Achievement Award winner.

“I’m excited to welcome Patrick to the Auburn Family,” Auburn head coach Ryan Wochomurka said. “I know he is eager to share his experience in competing at the highest levels both at NCAAs and Internationally with our program. He’s had a great opportunity to learn from some of the greatest minds in our sport at Michigan and Cal. He was a workhorse as an athlete and I look forward to him bringing that discipline, dedication and tireless work ethic to the other side of the pool deck.”

Callan graduated from Michigan in 2022 and did graduate studies at Cal. He’s a native of Tulsa, Okla.
