NEW COMMIT: Murrieta, Calif. native and current high school junior Liberty “Libby” Gilbert has announced her verbal commitment to The Ohio State University beginning in Fall 2020.

Gilbert does her club swimming with North Coast Aquatics and owns a pair of U.S. Open cuts with five additional Winter Juniors standards. She most recently competed at Juniors West in December where she placed ninth in the 500 free and 11th in the 200 back. She capped off her long course season by placing 17th in the 200m back with a trio of lifetime bests at Junior Nationals and registered six top-12 finishes at Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals last March.

Also competing for Murrieta Mesa High School, Gilbert is a four-time CIF Southern DII Section Championship finalist. She placed third in both the 100 back and 200 free as a sophomore after placing fourth and second, respectively, in those events during her freshman season. The NISCA All-American also finished third in the 200 free and sixth in the 100 back at the CIF State Championships during her rookie campaign.

She told Swimming World:

“Beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to The Ohio State! The incredibly team culture is unmatchable anywhere else  and they are  building momentum heading towards some huge accomplishments in the near future- I can’t wait to be a part of it! Huge thanks to my family, friends, and coaches for getting me where I am today! Go Buckeyes!!!!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 54.21
  • 200 back – 1:56.43
  • 100 free – 50.69
  • 200 free – 1:48.59
  • 500 free – 4:48.32

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Buckeyes, Gilbert will make a big impact in the freestyle and backstroke events. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200 back as well as the C-final of the 500 free and 100 back at the 2019 Big Ten Championships where Ohio State finished third overall in the team standings.
