Ohio State Invitational: OSU Women Lead Louisville by Single Point
The Ohio State Fall Invitational kicked off on Thursday from McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus.
Strong swims from Indiana, Ohio State, Yale and Louisville opened on the first night of the meet, but the women’s scores were extremely close with the top two teams within a point of each other.
Ohio State leads the women’s meet with 636 points. Louisville is second with 635, followed by Indiana (596), UCLA (381), Notre Dame (272), Cincinnati (215), Penn State (212), Yale (183) and Rutgers (96).
Indiana leads the men’s meet with 868.5 points. Ohio State is second (687), followed by Louisville (681), Yale (377.5), Penn State (349), Cincinnati (273) and Northwestern (75).
Women’s 200 Free Relay
It wasn’t quite what Virginia went on Wednesday, but the Louisville women threw down an impressive 200 free relay to open the meet.
Caroline Larsen, Julia Dennis, Ella Welch and Gabi Albiero won the race in 1:26.18. The time was a second faster than their seed, but also was more than a second behind Virginia’s 1:24.68.
Ohio State held off Indiana in a close finish for second.
Teresa Ivan, Nyah Funderburke, Erin Little and Rachel Bockrath got to the wall in 1:27.59.
Indiana’s Anna Peplowski, Mya Dewitt, Sze Yeo and Kristina Paegle took third in 1:27.63.
Men’s 200 Free Relay
Indiana was the fastest quartet to start the men’s finals. Owen McDonald, Luke Barr, Dylan Smiley and Finn Brooks won the 200 free relay in 1:16.23.
Louisville was just a tenth behind with Yassin Abdelghany, Dalton Lowe, Charlie Crush and Guy Brooks finishing in 1:16.36.
Ohio State’s Thomas Navikonis, Matthew Klinge, Mario McDonald and Daniel Baltes finished third in 1:16.78.
Women’s 500 Free
Olympian Anna Peplowski has put together a strong senior season with Indiana and threw down a fast time hold off the field in the 500 free.
Peplowski, who was part of the U.S. 800 free relay in Paris, won the race in 4:37.06.
Ohio State freshman Mila Nikanorov finished second in 4:38.84.
Just behind in third was Louisville freshman Daria Golovaty (4:39.14).
Men’s 500 Free
While the Big Ten and Midwest teams battled, Yale junior Noah Millard dropped four seconds from prelims to throw down a 4:11.29 to win the 500 free.
Indiana’s Zalan Sarkany finished second in 4:12.69 and Ohio State’s Alex Axon was third in 4:12.77.
Women’s 200 IM
Indiana sophomore Miranda Grana made it two in a row for the Hoosier women with a convincing win in the 200 IM.
Grana dropped nearly two seconds from her prelims swim and touched in 1:55.88, besting the field by more than a second.
Ohio State senior Paige Hall finished second in 1:57.08.
Louisville senior Fernanda Gomes Celidonio finished third in 1:57.77.
Men’s 200 IM
Indiana swept the top three spots in the men’s 200 IM in dominating fashion.
Owen McDonald dropped three seconds from his morning swim to get to the wall in 1:40.86.
Senior teammate Luke Barr took second in 1:41.91, the only two swimmers to break 1:42.
Hoosiers freshman Miroslav Knedla finished third in 1:42.44.
Women’s 50 Free
Five swimmers were within four tenths of a second in the 50 free.
Indiana junior Kristina Paegle reached the wall first in 21.92 to win the race.
Louisville had three of the next four with Julia Dennis taking second (21.98), Caroline Larsen finishing third (22.22) and Gabi Albiero taking fifth (22.29).
Ohio State’s Teresa Ivan finished fourth in 22.24.
Men’s 50 Free
Indiana sophomore Mikkel Lee dropped nearly a half second to best the field in the men’s sprint, going a 19.18 to lead a 1-2 finish with a twist.
Sophomore teammate Dylan Smiley finished just behind in 19.34, but so did Louisville sophomore Yassin Abdelghany in a tie for second.
Another tie was for fourth with Louisville’s Guy Brooks and Indiana’s Finn Brooks each swimming 19.35.
Women’s 400 Medley Relay
Indiana’s Kacey McKenna, Brearna Crawford, Miranda Grana and Kristina Paegle won the 400 medley relay in 3:29.93.
Ohio State’s Nyah Funderburke, Maria Ramos, Paige Hall and Rachel Bockrath took second in 3:30.96.
Louisville’s Paige Hetrick, Mia Cheatwood, Ella Welch and Julia Dennis took third in 3:31.20.
Men’s 400 Free Relay
Indiana’s Owen McDonald, Brian Benzing, Tomer Frankel and Mikkel Lee won the final relay of the night in 3:03.63.
Indiana’s B team was second in a huge event for the Hoosiers. Miroslav Knedla, Jassen Yep, Finn Brooks and Gavin Wight finished in 3:05.90.
Ohio State’s Cornelius Jahn, Tristan Jankovics, Evan Fentress and Daniel Baltes took third in 3:06.59.
