NEW COMMIT: Tyler Hong of Westlake, Ohio, has handed his commitment to Princeton University beginning in the fall of 2021. He will join National Age Group record-holder Brett Feyerick as a member of the Tigers’ Class of 2025.

Hong will be the third member of his family to swim in college, as his holder brothers Nick Hong is a sophomore at Kenyon while Marcus Hong swam for the Lords.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am extremely excited and honored to announce my commitment to the application process at Princeton University.  I am especially grateful to my family, coaches, teachers, teammates, and friends for all their encouragement and support throughout this process.  Go Tigers!!!”

Hong, who trains year-round with Firestone Akron Swim Team, most recently competed at the 18&U Winter Championships where he won six events and achieved four best times. At Juniors East last December, he placed 15th in the 400 IM and 16th in the 100 back.

At the end of 2019, Hong ranked 90th in the world for 18&U boys in the 200m IM with a time of 2:06.07. He recorded that time at NCSAs where he grabbed the silver medal.

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 22.25
  • 100 back – 47.89
  • 200 back – 1:46.09
  • 200 IM – 1:47.26
  • 400 IM – 3:54.47
  • 50 free – 21.01
  • 100 free – 44.90
  • 200 free – 1:39.03
  • 100 fly – 47.71

Also competing for St. Ignatius High School, Hong is a six-time individual Ohio State Championship finalist. He secured gold in the 200 IM and bronze in the 100 back as a junior while taking fourth and third, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.

He has also earned both NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

Hong will make an immediate impact when he suits up for the Tigers at the start of the 2021-22 season as he would’ve been their top backstroker last season in both the 100 and 200. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 100 back and the B-final of the 200 back and 200/400 IM at the 2020 Ivy League Championships where Princeton finished second behind Harvard.
