Off Deck, Feb. 15, 2017: Will Licon Rebounds from Trials and Injuries for Final Season at Texas
Will Licon has won two individual NCAA championships in each of the last two seasons while helping lead his Texas Longhorns to national titles on both occasions. He currently holds the American record in the 200-yard breast at 1:48.12.
Licon’s senior season got off to a rough start when he strained his groin in September, but he has been back on track in recent months heading into the Big-12 championships (Feb. 22-25 in Austin) and the NCAA championships (March 22-25 in Indianapolis). Licon joined today’s edition of Off Deck to discuss the year and to preview championship season.
Licon discussed his experience this summer when he finished third in the 200 breast at Olympic Trials despite posting a quick time of 2:08.14. He explained the emotions of that finish and how it felt to see longtime friend and rival Josh Prenot make the team and break the American record. Licon also reflected on his enormously successful career so far at Texas and what it means to be part of the Longhorns’ legacy. Finally, he explained best parts of swimming for Texas coach Eddie Reese.
