Notre Dame Lands Big 2025 Verbal From National Junior Teamer Nathan Szobota

NEW COMMIT: The University of Notre Dame has landed a huge verbal commitment for Fall 2025 from Olympic Trials qualifier Nathan Szobota of Richmond, Va.

He currently owns the fastest 1000 free time in the boys’ Class of 2025.

Szobota will join Jackson Armour as a member of the Fighting Irish’s Class of 2029.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I’m thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Notre Dame! I want to thank my family, friends, coaches, and teachers for helping me become who I am today. I also want to thank the Notre Dame coaching staff for giving me this amazing opportunity. GO IRISH!!!!”

Szobota, who does his club swimming with NOVA Of Virginia Aquatics, represented the USA at the World Junior Championships this past summer where he placed 10th in the 1500m free.

Throughout the summer, he earned Olympic Trials cuts in the 400m IM and 400m/800m/1500m free. He collected silver in the 800m free at Junior Nationals and took eighth in the mile at Phillips 66 Nationals. Back in the spring, he swept the 500/1000/1650 free at NCSA Championships.

His best times include:

  • 1650 free – 14:53.83
  • 1000 free – 8:50.44
  • 500 free – 4:18.38
  • 200 free – 1:37.31
  • 400 IM – 3:49.93
  • 1000 free – 8:50.44
  • 200 back – 1:46.26

Currently a junior at Douglas S. Freeman High School, Szobota took second in the 500 free and ninth in the 100 back at the 2023 Virginia Class 5 State Championships. He placed third and ninth, respectively, in those events during his freshman season.

Szobota might just be the best male recruit ever for Notre Dame, which is under the direction of second-year head coach Chris Lindauer. Szobota’s top mile time is already fast enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
