Notre Dame hosted Northwestern in a dual meet on January 16. The meet was close on both sides: the Fighting Irish women won 156.5-143.5 as the men won 166-132.
The Fighting Irish 200 medley relay team of Catherine Mulquin, Danielle Margheret, Cat Galletti, and Tayde Revilak won in 1:42.21 as the men’s team of Bogac Ayhan, Andrew Jensen, Matthew Grauslys, and Daniel Speers took first in 1:31.20. Gillette (54.69) and Revilak (55.76) later went 1-2 in the women’s 100 fly. Notre Dame went 1-2 in the women’s 200 free, led by Ella Moynihan (1:50.74), followed closely by teammate Kyra Sarazen (1:50.76). Moynihan also won the 500 free in 4:58.57. Notre Dame swept the women’s 100 breast, won by Margheret (1:03.76). Sherri McIntee (2:17.67) won the 200 breast as the Fighting Irish went 1-2-3.
“Our breaststroke group is really strong; when you have 1-2-3 finishes like we did in those events, it really shuts the door on your opponents and opens up the point spread. We talked about swimming aggressively, and really taking the lead right from the start, and we executed really well,” said Fighting Irish head coach Mike Litzinger in a Notre Dame press release.
Grauslys won both the men’s 200 fly (1:49.80) and 100 fly (49.57) and Justin Plaschka took first in the men’s 50 free (20.58) and 100 free (45.74). Other Notre Dame event winners included Mulquin in the women’s 100 back (54.71), Ayhan in the men’s 100 back (48.92), Nicole Smith in the women’s 200 fly (2:01.33), Robby Whitacre in the men’s 200 back (1:48.30), and Trent Jackson in the men’s 200 breast (2:04.59). The meet concluded with Reed Fujan, Michael Hudspith, Jackson, and Dan Fujan winning the men’s 400 medley relay in 3:02.49.
Notre Dame has a weekend off before hosting the Shamrock Invitational on January 29 and 30.
