Northwestern Sweeps Instate Women’s Tri-Meet, Men Top UIC

Northwestern on Saturday picked up three wins against instate rivals. The women’s team topped Illinois in a Big Ten meet while also besting the University of Illinois Chicago. The Northwestern men likewise handled UIC.

Women’s

  • Illinois 223, University of Illinois at Chicago 70
  • Northwestern 203, Illinois 92
  • Northwestern 212.5, University of Illinois at Chicago 78.5

Men’s

  • Northwestern 200, University of Illinois at Chicago 87

The day’s biggest intrigue came in 3-meter diving, with a time for victory. Northwestern’s Markie Hopkins, who had won the 1-meter event, and UIC’s Ciara McCliment finished even on 267.70 points. Hopkins had scored 277.90 to lead a Northwestern sweep of the 1-meter podium.

In the pool, the Wildcats spread the wins around. Jasmine Nocentini went 1:00.34 to win the 100 breaststroke, then claimed the 100 freestyle in 49.32. She outraced teammate Lindsay Ervin, who had won the 50 free in 23.41.

Lola Mull won the 500 free and 1,000 free. Hana Shimizu-Bowers won the 200 butterfly (in 1:59.55) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.57). Miriam Guevara claimed the 100 backstroke and 100 fly. Hannah Brunzell was second to Nocentini in the 100 breast and won the 200 breast.

Illinois’s Liv Dorshorst finished second in both the 500 and 1,00 free. Freshman Sara Jass took second in both breaststroke events.

On the men’s side, Northwestern faced little resistance. Ryan King waltzed to victory in both the 500 and 1,000 free. Tyler Lu claimed both backstroke events, with a 48.80 in the 100. The Wildcats swept breaststroke, with Kevin Houseman’s 54.38 in the 100 and Connor Morikawa’s 2:03.24 in the 200. Tona Zinn won the 200 IM and 200 fly.

Cole Tremewan got a win for the Flames with a score of 283.80 on 3-meter diving.
