Northwestern Sets Two Pool Records in Sweeping Penn State, Chicago
Cade Duncan and Tyler Lu set pool records on Saturday as Northwestern swept a tri-meet in Evanston against Penn State and the University of Chicago.
On the men’s side, Northwestern topped Penn State, 172-127, and Chicago, 231-62. Penn State defeated Chicago, 211-79. The Northwestern women scored victories of 207-88 over Penn State and 247-50 over Chicago. Penn State eased past Chicago, 205-86.
Duncan, a sophomore, clocked in at 42.75 seconds to win the 100 freestyle. He took down the pool record set in 2019 by Olympian Bowe Becker, representing Minnesota. He also went 43.31 off the front of the 400 free relay to lead the Wildcats to a win.
Lu celebrated senior day by going 1:45.23 in the 200 individual medley to get the win and put his name on the school record board. He took down the 2015 mark of Legor Lytvenok of Grand Canyon by .14 seconds.
Duncan was also third in the 100 fly, won by teammate Chris Leung in 47.32, an event in which the top six swimmers were clustered within eight tenths.
Stuart Seymour led Northwestern with a pair of wins. He went 45.84 to win the 100 backstroke and 20.03 to capture the 50 free. Duncan, Seymour, Connor Schuster (second in the 100 free) and Malachi Cohen (second in the 200 free) teamed up for the 400 free relay victory.
Adam Cohen swept both diving events for Northwestern. Alexander Rousseau won the 1,000 free. David Gerchik captured the 200 back. Diego Nosak won the 200 fly and was second to Lu in the 200 IM.
Penn State started the meet with a thrilling win in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Matthew Bittner, Mariano Lazzerini, Cooper Morley and Tylor Kim went 1:25.30, edging Northwestern by .06 seconds. (Kim had to hold off a finishing relay split of 18.83 from Duncan.)
Lazzerini swept the breaststroke events. Eduardo Cisternas claimed the 200 free and 500 free, the latter ahead of Rylan Anselm, who also finished second in the 1,00 free. Cooper Morley was second in the 100 back and 100 fly.
The dominance by the Northwestern women started from the sprint corps, one that fostered a 1-2 result in both relays. Nikki Venema led a 1-2-3 result in the 50 free, going 22.58. Lindsay Ervin and Audrey Yu followed. Ervin won the 100 free in 49.95 ahead of Yu. Venema, who also finished second in the 100 fly, Ervin and 100 breast and 200 IM winner Sophie Martin were on both winning relays.
Zoe Nordmann swept the 1,000 free and 500 free. Lilly Mehok won the 200 fly, Claire Mehok the 200 back. Sydney Smith won the 200 free, and Maggie Papanicholas edged Smith in the 200 breast.
