Noè Ponti Fires Off 50.16 Swiss Record In 100 Fly; Goes Sixth All-Time
Noè Ponti unleashed a 50.16 blast in the 100 fly to go sixth all-time in the prelims of the Swiss Championships in Uster.
The Olympic bronze medallist split 23.82/26.34 to take 0.58secs from his previous Swiss record of 50.74 en-route to third in Tokyo.
It takes him top of the 2024 rankings, 0.45 clear of Australian Matt Temple who went 50.61 last month.
It follows his 22.65 effort in the 50 fly which also propelled him to sixth in the rankings.
All-Time Rankings
49.45: Caeleb Dressel, 2020 Olympics
49.68: Kristof Milak, 2020 Olympics
49.82: Michael Phelps, 2009 World Championships
49.95: Milorad Cavic, 2009 World Championships
50.14: Maxime Grousset, 2023 World Championships
50.16: Noè Ponti, 2024 Swiss Championships
Ponti has had a superb few months and his performance on Saturday reinforces his position as a real contender for at least a medal at Paris 2024, if not a tilt at the title.
The 22-year-old won an unprecedented fly treble, including a European record over 100m, at the European Short-Course Championships in Otopeni, which he described as “redemption” for the 2023 World Championships where his performances fell well short of that which had guided him to the Olympic podium.
Ponti had already served notice of his intentions with 50.93 at the Finale Giant Open in St-Germain-en-Laye last month.
