Ning Zetao Injures Shoulder During Warmup Incident
Ning Zetao, China’s top sprinter who was looking at a full slate of up to eight gold medals at the 2015 World Military Games, was injured yesterday during a warmup incident.
While warming up for prelims of the 100-meter freestyle, Chinese media reports that a “foreign female athlete suddenly jumped into the water” on top of Ning, leading to a shoulder injury for Ning.
Ning went on to swim in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, posting a subpar time of 51.14 but still qualifying for finals. He wound up scratching finals, leaving seven swimmers to compete for the title.
According to local reports, Ning could not raise his arm after prelims, and spent time in a local hospital for an examination.
Those reports also state that Ning suffered soft tissue damage, but his bones remained intact. The injury also continued to get worse, and he was unable to move his arm today.
Ning made noise this summer when he won the gold medal in the men’s 100-meter free at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
He also won gold in the 50, 100, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay at the 2014 Asian Games, where he initially set the Asian record in the men’s 100-meter freel.
