Nick Albiero followed up his first NCAA title in March with a 1:57.86 to win the 200 butterfly on Saturday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo, holding off Chase Kalisz in the process, who was second at 1:58.16.
Albiero led from the front, splitting a 55.76 and 1:26.37 at the second and third turns, leading a young field of challengers that will make this race very interesting at Olympic Trials in June. Albiero’s Louisville teammate Zach Harting was third at 1:59.38, pushing a 31.54 on the final 50 to nearly catch the top two.
Albiero’s time is the fastest any American has been this year.
Californians Zheng Quah (1:59.47) and Michael Tenney (1:59.95) also broke 2:00 in the final.
17-year-old Katie Crom won the 200 butterfly on Saturday morning in her home pool in Mission Viejo at the TYR Pro Swim Series with a 2:10.38 as she came from way off the pace, splitting a 33.02 on the final 50 to run down Alto’s Lillie Nordmann (2:10.62) and Katie Drabot (2:10.94). Crom was nearly two full seconds behind Drabot at the 150 turn, and unleashed a Jon Sieben-like final 50 to run the field down, securing the win in Hali Flickinger’s absence, who scratched this race to focus on the 400 free later.
Flickinger is still the US favorite to win the gold medal in Tokyo this summer, as Crom put herself as the sixth fastest American this year.
Cal’s Rachel Klinker (2:11.25) and Texas’ Remedy Rule (2:11.75) placed fourth and fifth as it was anyone’s race on the final 50.
Mission Viejo had three swimmers in the final as coach Mark Schubert had Crom, Haley Anderson (2:13.47) and Justina Kozan (2:15.08) in the field.
