Nicholas Askew, Andrew Hendricks, Braden Holloway Nominated for National Collegiate Scholastic Trophy

Swim coaches Nicholas Askew, Andrew Hendricks and Braden Holloway were named as the finalists for the National Collegiate Scholastic Trophy, announced on Wednesday.

The award is given jointly by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA). It recognizes the individual who has made, “the greatest contribution to swimming as a competitive sport, and as a healthful, recreational activity in the province of undergraduate and scholastic education.”

Askew is the Director of Swimming and Diving at Howard University, the nation’s only Division I swim program at a historically Black college and university. In his eighth season in charge, he inherited a program with a lengthy winless streak and turned his alma mater into a conference power. He’s qualified swimmers for the NCAA Championships and the Tokyo Olympics. In 2020, Askew won the Maritza Correia McClendon Award for Diversity in Aquatics and was the 2020 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Coach of the Year. He has also extended Howard’s reach in the District of Columbia community, including a month-long water safety course in a partnership with Swim Up, Inc., in the summer of 2021.

Hendricks founded the programs at Division III Franklin College. In ten seasons, he’s helped nine swimmers qualify for NCAAs, six earn CSCAA All-America recognition and coached 210 all-conference honorees. Franklin is also the athletics director of the school in Franklin, Indiana, which has hosted the NCAA Division III Championships on three occasions.

Holloway has turned NC State into one of the premier swim programs in the nation. In his 10 years leading the Wolfpack, he’s led the men’s and women’s team to 10 top-10 finishes at NCAAs and five top-five finishes, capped by a runner-up result at the 2021 women’s meet. He’s led his alma matter to eight ACC team titles, a 117-43-1 dual-meet record, has coached 13 individual or relay NCAA titlist and been named ACC Coach o the Year eight times. Holloway also has trained a number of Olympians, both as undergrads at NC State and in his post-grad groups.

The National Collegiate Scholastic Trophy candidates are voted on by CSCAA Member Coaches. The winner will be announced on May 2 as part of the 61st annual CSCAA College Swimming and Diving Awards. The list of 59 coaches to have won the award in the past is available here.
