Claire Tuggle Transfers to USC from Virginia

Claire Tuggle has announced she will transfer to USC from Virginia.

Tuggle made the announcement on social media on Friday.

“I want start this with a big thank you to the coaches and team at UVA and everything they have given me over the past year. With that being said I am so excited to announce I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at the University of Southern California. I am so excited for this next chapter and too see what it brings. Fight On,” Claire Tuggle posted on Instagram.

Tuggle was an NCAA qualifier last year but was left off the championship roster because of the team roster limit rule.

Originally from California, she will return to her home state.

Claire Tuggle’s 2022-23 Freshman Highlights
• Finished fourth in the 500 free and seventh in the 1650 free at ACC Championships
• Finished fourth in the 200 free at the Cavalier Invite
• Won the 500 free and placed third in the 200 free against NC State and North Carolina
• Finished third in the 200 free against Virginia Tech
• Placed fourth in the 1000 free against Texas
• Won the 500 free against Florida

 

Claire Tuggle made the A-Finals in the 200 & 400 freestyle at the 2019 US Nationals as she finished sixth in the 200 free and fourth in the 400 freestyle. She also reached the C-Final in the 200 IM where she placed 23rd overall. At the 2019 Juniors a week later, she won the 800 freestyle.

At the international level, she finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:59.83) and seventh in the 400 freestyle (4:12.39) at the 2019 World Juniors in Budapest as well as anchoring the gold medal winning 4×200 free relay with a 1:58.39.

Tuggle famously got within a tenth of a second of Sippy Woodhead’s legendary 200 freestyle 13-14 national age group record that has stood since the 1978 World Championships at the 2018 Junior Pan Pacs where she swam a 1:58.58, missing the record of 1:58.51.

It’s a good move for Claire. Virginia is an overwhelming place to swim: too much pressure. Hopefully Claire can regain her form from a few years ago and lead the Trojans.
