Last week, legendary coach Eddie Reese guided the University of Texas at the NCAA Men’s Championships for the final time, leading the Longhorns to a seventh-place finish in the team standings. Additionally, Luke Hobson captured his second consecutive NCAA title in the 200-yard freestyle, in the process setting NCAA and American records with a time of 1:28.81.
Reese has been at the helm of the Texas program for 46 years and will retire from coaching at the conclusion of the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. Once Reese departs the sport, however, it’s a guarantee that his influence will continue to be felt, especially by the athletes he mentored – in the sport and in life – and by the coaches he influenced.
Ahead of his retirement, it seemed like an appropriate time to remind our readers that a sensational book on Reese is available for purchase. The book, “Eddie Reese: Coaching Swimming, Teaching Life,” is now available in three formats: Hardcover, softcover and – as a new option – in audio form. The authors of the book, Chuck Warner and Dana Abbott, formerly coached with Reese and have made their own impacts in the sport. Warner is a three-time National Team coach while Abbott is a former president of NISCA.
