Nebraska Rolls past Iowa State Behind Gena Jorgenson
Nebraska captured 13 individual titles and swept a pair of relay crowns on its way to a 202-94 women’s swimming and diving victory over Iowa State at the Devaney Natatorium on Friday afternoon.
All-American Gena Jorgenson led the Huskers with a trio of individual victories, while Maia Hall, Maisie Gilford and Beatrix Tanko each added a pair of individual titles for the Big Red. Gilford and Tanko were also part of both relay wins in Nebraska’s most complete effort of the season.
Sophomore Abby Baxter added to Nebraska’s hardware haul by sweeping the one-meter and three-meter diving titles, as the Huskers dominated in the well by sweeping the top spots in both diving events.
Jorgenson, a Husker captain from Aberdeen, S.D., who earned first-team All-America honors in the 1,650 free last season, shined in her first swim at that distance this season. The junior cruised to victory in 16:08.14, before adding a win in the 500 free (4:59.39). She capped her day with a victory in the 200 backstroke (2:02.65), while also swimming a leg on NU’s winning 400 freestyle relay team.
Gilford raced to victory in the 50 free (23.61) and 100 free (51.68), while adding to Husker wins in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Tanko matched Gilford’s contributions by notching individual wins in the 200 freestyle (1:52.20) and 100 butterfly (57.11) while joining Gilford in both relay victories.
Hall swept the breaststroke events for the Huskers, producing a time of 1:03.68 in the 100, while posting a 2:18.57 in the 200 breast. Hall was also a member of NU’s second-place 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:46.61.
Freshman Marissa Laurin claimed her first collegiate individual title by swimming to victory in the 200 individual medley (2:06.17). She added runner-up finishes in the 100 backstroke (56.77) and 200 back (2:03.25), while also swimming a leg on NU’s winning 200 medley relay team.
Baxter win the three-meter diving event with a 308.48, while adding another victory with a 308.25 on the one meter. Antonina Harned added second-place finishes on both the three-meter (307.95) and one-meter (294.83) boards, while Frankie Webb (271.50) and Nettie Knapton (271.43) completed a sweep of the top four spots on the one meter.
The Huskers hit the road to face Kansas on Friday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. (CT) in Lawrence.
