COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. GEORGIA's Allison Schmitt became just the second Bulldog ever to win the women's 500-yard free at the NCAA Division I Championships.
Schmitt posted a swift time of 4:35.17 in the middle distance vent for the win. The win matched the effort by Georgia's Laura Conway, who won in 2006 for the Bulldogs with a 4:40.01.
Schmitt's time became the 13th-fastest of all time, and improved Schmitt's standing as the sixth-fastest swimmer ever behind Katie Hoff (4:30.47), Kate Ziegler (4:32.71), Caroline Burckle (4:33.60), Janet Evans (4:34.39) and Dagny Knutson (4:34.78).
Georgia also claimed silver in the event as Wendy Trott raced to a 4:36.20, while Auburn's Maggie Bird took third in 4:36.89.
Georgia's depth in the event moved the Bulldogs into first with 73 points, while California sat second with 55 points. Arizona (49), Auburn (48) and Stanford (32) made up the rest of the top five.
