COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 20. CALIFORNIA's Dana Vollmer demonstrated some amazing endurance to come back from a strong 100 fly finish to claim the women's 200-yard free in an NCAA meet record.
Vollmer back-halfed the race to win in 1:42.01, which beat her preliminary meet record of 1:42.63. The swim, the fourth-best of all time, gives Vollmer four out of the top five swims in the event in history. It is also just the second time the Golden Bears have won the event with Conny Van Bentum owning the previous title with a 1:46.45 back in 1986.
Georgia's Morgan Scroggy (1:42.90) and Allison Schmitt (1:43.09) captured some serious points for the Bulldogs by placing second and third.
California pushed its top tally to 246 points with Georgia sitting second with 218 points. Arizona continued to battle back from its heartbreaking relay disqualification during prelims to stand third with 215.5 points. Stanford (182) and Auburn (136) held fourth and fifth.
