NCAA Women’s 200 Backstroke

Virginia’s Claire Curzan looked smooth and strong in the 200 backstroke in her heat, as did Florida’s Bella Sims.

Curzan got to the wall in 1:48.01, while Sims was at 1:49.09.

Meanwhile, defending champion Phoebe Bacon of Wisconsin and NC State’s Leah Shackley were also smooth and just behind the leaders, setting up an intriguing final that also includes Cal’s Isabelle Stadden and Tennessee’s Josephine Fuller.

Shackley took the third seed in 1:49.58, followed by Bacon (1:49.61), Fuller (1:50.02), Virginia Tech’s Carmen Weiler Sastre (1:50.22), Stadden (1:50.51) and NC State’s Erika Pelaez (1:05.55).

NCAA Women’s 100 Freestyle

Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh cruised to the wall in 45.19 to take the top seed in the 100 free. She has the NCAA record in 44.83 set last year and that record is in danger.

Stanford junior Torri Huske took the second seed in 46.54, just ahead of Tennessee’s Cammile Spink (46.84) and Virginia freshman Anna Moesch (46.96).

Michigan put two in the finals with Stephanie Balduccini (47.09) taking the fifth spot and Lindsay Flynn (47.29) the seventh, one spot behind Louisville’s Julia Dennis (47.11).

USC’s Minna Abraham snagged the eighth spot by two hundredths of a second over Indiana’s Anna Peplowski, who won the 200 free on Friday.

There is a three-way tie for 16th with Ohio State’s Teresa Ivan, Texas’ Erin Gemmell and Georgia’s Helena Jones all finishing in exactly 47.88.

In the swim-off, Jones won in 47.64, ahead of Gemmell (47.91) and Ivan (47.95).

NCAA Women’s 200 Breaststroke

If there was a race that was wide open coming into the meet, it was the 200 breaststroke. The huge names stayed away from this event and many of the biggest names remaining were better 100 breaststrokers.

It led to a final where swimmers from BYU, Washington State and Duke are all in the top three.

BYU’S Mackenzie Miller took the top seed in 2:06.12, just ahead of Stanford junior Lucy Bell (2:06.61).

Washington State junior Emily Lundgren put together a great race in her home state with a 2:06.83 to take the third spot.

The fourth spot went to Duke junior Kaelyn Gridley in 2:06.93.

Indiana senior Brearna Crawford grabbed the fifth spot in 2:07.16, followed by Virginia junior Amy Canny (2:07.20), Tennessee’s Mona McSharry (2:07.30), who finished second in the 100 breast, and Cal’s Abigail Herscu (2:07.60).
