NCAA Women’s Championships, Day 4 Finals: Virginia Punctuates Meet With 400 Freestyle Relay Title
A fifth consecutive NCAA championship for the University of Virginia was captured in style on Saturday night, as the Cavaliers won the 400-yard freestyle relay to end action at the King County Aquatic Center. Behind the quartet of Claire Curzan, Anna Moesch, Alex Walsh and Gretchen Walsh, Virginia posted a time of 3:06.01 to easily capture first place, finishing more than two seconds clear of Tennessee.
Virginia’s time was just off its American and NCAA records from the 2023 season, when the Cavaliers checked in at 3:05.84.
The victory, although not needed, sealed the latest in a run of five straight national titles for UVA, under the direction of coach Todd DeSorbo. Virginia totaled 544 points over the four-day meet, a total that was more than 100 points ahead of the 417 recorded by Stanford in its runnerup showing.
Curzan, who earlier in the session won the 200 backstroke in an American record, jumpstarted Virginia’s winning relay with an opening split of 47.07. Moesch, a freshman, followed with a split of 46.86, and the Walsh sisters punctuated the relay with legs of 47.04 and 45.04. When Gretchen Walsh entered the water for the anchor leg, Virginia trailed Tennessee by .21, although that deficit was erased immediately.
Walsh might be the biggest game-changer in the history of NCAA swimming, and it was more than appropriate that she cap the Cavs’ championship.
En route to second place, Tennessee received an opening split of 46.90 from Camille Spink, who gave way to Josephine Fuller (46.48), Ella Jansen (47.40) and Brooklyn Douthwright (47.85).
